647 Scouts Make TV Commerical for "Operation Can Do"

On Wednesday, October 22nd, WXYZ Channel 7 News filmed a Public Service Announcement (PSA) for the Operation Can Do "Scouting for Food" Drive and the scouts from Cub Scout Pack 647 and Boy Scout Troop 647 was part of this exciting event. Also part of this event was Pack 128, Pack 367, and Troop 367.

"Scouting for Food" is a yearly initiative sponsored by the BSA to collect canned goods during the first week of November. All food donations are given to the Hunger Action Coalition who distribute the food to more than 400 faith-based, nonprofit and public agencies, who in turn fed 1.5 million people in the metro Detroit area.

The "Scouting for Food" PSA was filmed on the grounds of the WXYZ Channel 7 Studios in Southfield. Our sons did us proud while honing their acting skills under the direction of WXYZ Channel 7 Producer/Director Greg Hepp and BSA Motor City District Executive Trae Grant.

The scouts learned that it takes patience and listening skills to make a successful television commercial. Through many takes and re-takes, the scouts kept going until they got their film segments correct. This was definitely a special experience and one of many opportunities that scouting provides. And the scouts that were part of this television commercial received a special BSA Network Scouting Patch as a thank-you and reminder of their network television experience.

Water Sports Workshop - November 22, 2008 - Earning the Cub Scout Swimming Belt Loop

Today, the Boll YMCA sponsored a Cub Scout Water Sports Workshop where Pack 647 Bear Scout Darryl M. and 14 other scouts from Pack 23 were exposed to swimming fundamentals, water sports and aquatic safety. The workshop activities included water adjustment, floating, water polo, other games, and learning how to safely enter and exit a canoe.

The activities from this Cub Scout Water Sports Workshop enabled Darryl to fulfill the requirements for the Cub Scout Swimming Belt Loop.

Cub Scout Meeting - November 22, 2008 - Kindness, Team Work & Leadership

During today's cub scout meeting, our Tigers, Wolves, and Bears learned about the "Seeds of Kindness" from Den Leader Mrs. Gordon-King while the Webelos studied Team Work and Leadership principles from Den Leaders Holmes and Hampton. After the meeting, the boys enjoyed a great home-made meal of Nachos prepared by Mrs. Holmes.

2008 Webelos Project Cotton Candy Event

On Saturday, November 8th, the Webelos from Cub Scout Pack 647 participated in a community service event called Project Cotton Candy. This was an outing to the local women shelter where we celebrate the birthdays of the children who live in the shelter. Cub Scouts attend the 2008 Native American Pow Wow

Today, our Tigers, Wolves, and Bears from Pack 647 were able to watch Native Americans celebrate the customs and culture of the indigenous Michigan Indians at the 16th Annual Native American Festival and Mini Pow Wow in Southfield, MI.

The boys were able to be a part of the native dancing, enter a real tee pee, learn the Principles of the Grandfathers, listen to Native American Folk Tales, and buy real Native American items, all while earning their Native American Hertiage Patch.

2008 Mommy & Me Weekend - Olympic Moments

Last Saturday and Sunday, Mothers and sons from Cub Scout Pack 647 joined other moms and sons from the Motor City District to stay overnight at the D-BAR-A Boy Scout Ranch for the annual "Mommy and Me" Weekend.

The theme this year was the Olympics so all the Moms and sons took part in sporting games. We did the 3-legged race, the long jump, the noodle throw, played baseball (the mom's won!!), the 200 yard dash, and the boys participated in bb gun shooting. We also did a craft to make an Olympic torch and did an Olympic torch run when we joined the the boy scouts at their camp fire.

Cub Scout Meeting - October 11, 2008 - Adventures in Books & Maps, Operation Can-Do

During today's cub scout meeting, our Tigers, Wolves, and Bears learned that they can find "Adventures in Books" from Den Leader Mrs. Gordon-King while the Webelos navigated the neighborhood while learning the principles of map reading from Den Leaders Holmes and Hampton.

According to the Hunger Action Coalition, each year an estimated 700,000 people in Michigan receive emergency food. Since 2001, there has been a 20 percent increase in demand for emergency food from local food pantries, soup kitchens and other social service organizations. Approximately 13% of the population in the tri-county area live below the poverty level established by the federal government.

Since Scouting is a service organization, it is our responsiblity to help where we can. At today's cub scout meeting, Mrs. Gordon-King passed out Scouting for Food plastic bags. Each scout should bring at a mimimum 1 bag full of canned food back to our meeting on Saturday, November 8th. Additonal bags are available for scouts to give to friends and neighbors. All food donations collected are given to the Hunger Action Coalition who distributes the food to more than 400 faith-based, nonprofit and public agencies. The food donated will fed 1.5 million people in the metro Detroit area. Each year, thousands of Scouts participate and collect over 200 tons of food for Southeastern Michigan food banks.

Let's do what we can as parents and leaders to make this effort a success. REMEMBER, FOOD IS DUE ON SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 8th...

Welcome to Cub Scout Pack 647 !!!! 2008-2009

Starting today, Cub Scout Pack 647 has this new website which will be used to inform our parents of upcoming events and all pertinent information on the pack. We will be updating the site and adding new items as we continue throughout the scouting year. There is also a Pack 647 calendar located at the bottom of this page which is a one-stop shop to find all the events within our pack.

Today was also the first meeting of the 2008-2009 scouting season. Welcome to the new scouts and parents that joined during today's meeting.

Our leaders for the 2008-2009 Cub Scout season are as follows:

Nash Watt - Treasurer

Njoki Wainaina - Popcorn Kernel

We are looking for volunteers to fill positions on our Pack Committee. If you are willing and able, please sign up and volunteer.

Cub Scouts and parents meet on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays at 12:30pm in the Youth Lounge on the lower level of Hartford Memorial Baptist Church, located at 18700 James Couzens Fwy, Detroit, MI 48235.

The dues for the 2008-2008 season are $60 for new cub scouts and $55 for returning cub scouts. Make out all checks to "Cub Scout Pack 647" and submit them to the Treasurer. The dues include a one year subscription to "Boy's Life" Magazine.


Each new scout will need a uniform. You can order the uniform online or buy the uniform at the main Scouting Office at 1776 West Warren Avenue in Detroit, MI. Each scout will need the following:

<> Cub Scout Shirt - long or short sleeve
<> Cap for Tiger, Wolf, Bear, or Webolos
<> Neckerchief and Slide for Tiger, Wolf, Bear, or Webolos
<> Belt for Tiger, Wolf, Bear, or Webolos
<> Manual for Tiger, Wolf, Bear, or Webolos
<> Detroit Area Council Patch
<> Unit Numerals - 6, 4, 7

Scouts may wear jeans or blue pants - there is no need to buy the cub scout pants. Here are links to pictures of uniforms for each level of cub scout:

While it is optional, you son will probably also want a red brag vest so that he can wear it and proudly display all the patches he will receive while he is a cub scout. Those parents who can sew can make this red vest instead of buying it (see Mrs. Gordon-King for ideas. Her son's vest is hand designed and trimmed in African inspired kuba cloth)...

Ready! Set! Go Sell Popcorn!

The Girl Scouts have their cookies and we Cub Scouts have our Popcorn. It is time again for our Popcorn Sales Drive. The selling of Popcorn helps the scouts to fund the fun activities that are done throughout the scouting season.

Popcorn order forms were passed out at today's scout meeting. The first scout to turn in an order for over $100 in popcorn will receive a special edition scouting cap. All scouts that turn in at least one completely sold out order form will all receive special gifts. It was suggested that you target friends, relatives, and neighbors.

This year, the Popcorn Kernel for our pack is Njoki Wainaina. Her contact information is (313)590-0188 (evenings), nwiainain@ford.com (weekdays only). Please give her 24 hours to respond to your questions.

Absolutely No Personal Checks Accepted by Pack 647 for popcorn payment. Only Cash, Money Orders, or Cashiers Checks, made out to "Cubscout Pack 647", will be accepted. NO EXCEPTIONS!!

For every $ 100.00 in popcorn orders you place, your cub will receive a $ 10.00 discount on his registration cost. So SALE! SALE! SALE!

If you do not attend Hartford we encourage you to take orders at your church during this time as well.

CALLING ALL MOTHERS: Register for Mommy & Me Event - DEADLINE 9/24

Mommy and Me Goes to the Olympics
When: October 4 - 5, 2008

Where: D-Bar-A Scout Ranch – Trout Lake Cabin (Map)

Cost: Only $30.00 per person (Due by September 24, 2008). This includes 2 meals, a patch, craft supplies and Cabin Shelter (Bedding is not provided).

Why: This is a chance for Moms to go overnight camping (in cabins) with their sons.

Food: Please bring a lunch and we will provide dinner on Saturday. Breakfast will be served on Sunday only.

Extras: Bring boots and dress appropriately for the weather. Also bring canteen/water bottles, flashlights, sleeping bags (bedding) and hygiene items. Check in begins at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday.

SAVE MONEY: Recycled Scouting Uniforms

Scouting uniforms can be very expensive, and everyone can use a helping hand. If you need a uniform, you can contact Mrs. Cleary at 248-644-7327. She has Cubs, Boys, and Venture Scout uniforms. She operates like a trading post where you trade in a uniform that your child can no longer wear for a new one in your child's size.

She has been in business for a long time and has traded over 4,000 uniforms. Mrs. Cleary lives in Beverly Hills, MI.
